Biden-Harris Administration Striding Forward on Chemical Safety
The US Environmental Protection Agency recently proposed a ban on the majority of consumer and workplace uses of the solvent 1-Bromopropane (1-BP), a known carcinogen. The move aims to enhance public health protection and pesticide safety. The startling link between 1-BP exposure and serious health implications like skin, lung, and intestinal cancers as well as damage to vital organs underpins the urgent requirement of the proposed rule.
Implications for Consumers and Pesticide Applicators
If approved, all but one consumer application of 1-BP will be proscribed, alongside several workplace uses. The EPA is also advocating for effective worker safeguards for industrial and commercial uses that won’t be banned. This initiative aligns with President Biden’s ambitious Cancer Moonshot project, which targets a significant reduction in cancer incidences.
Commercial and Industrial Uses of 1-BP Slated for Ban
The EPA proposes a total ban on consumer applications of 1-BP except for insulation. Moreover, certain industrial and commercial uses are slated for a ban after a thorough EPA analysis revealed safer alternatives. Industries impacted by the proposed ban include:
Commercial and Industrial Uses |
---|
Dry cleaning, spot cleaning, and stain removers |
Adhesives and sealants |
Coin and scissor cleaners |
Automotive care products |
Anti-adhesive agents for mold cleaning |
Functional fluids |
Arts, crafts, and hobby materials |
Worker Protections and Pesticide Safety Measures Proposed
In tandem, the proposed rule envisions several worker safeguards for some industrial and commercial applications of 1-BP that pose risks to human health. As an essential part of these protections, non-federal workplaces will be required to institute a Workplace Chemical Protection Program and use chemical-resistant gloves.
Call for Public Engagement
The EPA welcomes public reading and comment on this proposal, especially from entities such as manufacturers, processors, small quantity users, and pesticide applicators who would be affected by the proposed workplace safety guidelines.
